Different Types of Wireless Vibration Sensors

A vibration sensor is a smart device that measures the vibration in a machine, system, or equipment to detect problems and predict breakdowns. So, any business using heavy equipment needs wireless vibration sensors for understanding damages and monitoring the performance of assets. They are used for monitoring the overall health of several machines like water pumps, gearboxes, compressors, and wind turbines.

Vibration sensors are available in various forms and each type has its unique applications in different industries:

1. Strain Gauges- A strain gauge is a foil that is attached directly to the machine’s surface. It collects readings based on the vibrations of the equipment. So, the strain gauge must be properly attached to the surface for accurate measurements.

2. Microphone Sensors- Microphone sensors perform an excellent job of detecting alterations in vibration frequency. They are cost-effective and are also known as acoustic pressure sensors.

3. Eddy-Currents- Commonly used in laboratories, the Eddy-Current sensor is one type of non-contact sensor. It measures an object’s relative movement.

4. Vibration Meters- Organizations use vibration meters for performing a quick check-up on individual assets.

5. Laser Displacement- This is a Wireless Vibration Sensor, and it relies on a laser beam for taking measurements.

6. Accelerometers- This is the most common type of sensor and is used for monitoring the velocity of a component. Whenever there is a change in velocity, the accelerometer will generate an electric signal.

7. Gyroscopes- A contact sensor used for measuring angular velocity with the help of microelectromechanical systems or MEMS technology.

Wired and Wireless Vibration Sensors

There are two types of vibration sensors: wired and wireless. Wireless vibration sensors are becoming increasingly popular as they let you track a machine’s performance from a remote location. With the help of an IoT platform, a wireless vibration sensor sends real-time alerts to your device.
